According to census 2001, India has 2.2 crore physically challenged persons, including orthopaedically disabled, visually impaired, hearing/speech impaired and mentally-ill persons.

To provide opportunities to physically-handicapped persons to bring them into mainstream, world disabled day is celebrated every year by the Social Justice Department. The programme was a multifaceted and multidisciplinary festival of visual and performing arts providing opportunities to showcase artistic excellence of physically challenged persons. In the programmes people with mental/physical disabilities unleashed their creative energies in the form of various arts and cultural programmes during World Disabled Day celebrations conducted by Social Justice Department.
